What is a Dowel Pin?
A dowel pin is a precision cylindrical fastener used to align, position, or join two or more machine components accurately. Dowel pins ensure precise assembly in machinery, molds, jigs, fixtures, and automotive components where exact positioning is critical.
Unlike threaded fasteners, dowel pins are typically press-fit or slip-fit into reamed holes to maintain dimensional accuracy and structural integrity.

Types of Dowel Pins
Dowel Pins Hardened
These are precision cylindrical pins made from hardened steel. They typically have a cylindrical shape with a smooth surface and one or two chamfered ends. The chamfers aid in easy insertion and alignment during assembly. These dowel pins are manufactured with tight tolerances to ensure precise fit and positioning between mating parts.
Dowel Pins Unhardened
Unhardened Dowel Pins are cylindrical pins typically made of low-carbon steel or stainless steel. These pins undergo minimal or no heat treatment, resulting in a softer material. , resulting in a softer material. As a result, these pins are not as resistant to wear and shear forces as their hardened counter parts but offer advantages in terms of machinability and flexibility.
Internal Threaded Dowel Pins Hardened
These are mechanical fasteners commonly used in various industries to align and secure two or more components together. They are designed to fit into corresponding holes, usually blind holes, providing precise positioning and preventing misalignment. The threading is provided to extract the pins from blind holes. The outer diameter of the dowel pins is typically finished with precision grinding to ensure a smooth and uniform finish.
Internal Threaded Dowel Pins Unhardened
These pins are commonly made from steel, such as low carbon free cutting steel or sometimes medium steel, or stainless steel. The specific material used depends on the application requirements, considering factors such as strength, corrosion resistance, and environmental conditions. The surface finish of these dowel pins is typically finished with precision grinding to facilitate easy installation and removal.

Cylindrical (Dowel) or Parallel Pins are used either to retain parts in a fixed position or to preserve alignment. A few of them are illustrated above. Type A, B, C, & D are unhardened from Free cutting or low and medium Carbon steel material. Our manufacturing range for Cylindrical (Dowel) Pins is 1.5 mm to 25 mm in diameter and 5mm to 150mm in length. Type E is hardened from alloy steel material.
Internal Threaded Cylindrical (Dowel) Pin are for easy extraction, from blind holes. They are manufactured in soft or unhardened condition (Type G) from Free cutting Carbon steel material. Hardened Pins (Type F) are manufactured from alloy steel or as per customers requirement. An air vent is usually provided.
Applications – These are designed to achieve maximum holding power in assemblies where parts must be accurately positioned and held in absolute relations to one another.

It is important to bear in mind that dowel pins should be employed for locating purposes and never to replace a screw for fastening purposes.
